The Community Foundation of Jackson County recently announced Grant Smith and Alexia Rieckers have been named the 2023 recipients of the Marc Owen Chandler Memorial Scholarship.

Smith is the son of Christina Smith and Mike Smith. While attending Seymour High School, Grant’s activities included football and swimming along with community, civic and church activities. He graduated with a Core 40 curriculum, academic honors and a technical honors diploma. His plans are to join the U.S. Navy.

Rieckers, who was active in softball and graduated with a Core 40 curriculum, will be attending Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus in the fall to become a surgical technician. She also will be playing softball for IUPUC.

Owen, Sam, Liam and Myles Chandler, nephews of Marc Chandler, presented the award May 20 during Seymour High School’s honor day.

Skip and Carol Chandler, along with the Chandler and Brugos families, established the Marc Owen Chandler Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Community Foundation of Jackson County in October 1996 in memory of Skip and Carol’s son.

The fund provides scholarships for advanced education and/or training to graduating seniors of Seymour High School.

The fund has steadily grown over the past 27 years thanks to the continuing support of Marc Chandler’s family and friends. To date, 39 students have received assistance in college expenses through scholarships from this fund. Seymour High School juniors entering their senior year can go online at cfiacksoncounty.org to fill out an application for the scholarship.

This application will be due no later than Aug. 22.
